Former Mags Joselu and Mikel Merino both scored in a penalty shootout as Spain reigned victorious over Croatia in the Nations League final last night.
The game itself wasn’t a classic, ending 0-0 after extra-time, but the ex-Toon duo were brought on in the latter stages of the game and played a key part in winning the shootout 5-4, both finishing superbly from the spot.
While it wouldn’t have been too far-fetched to suggest Merino could make it at the highest level, nobody could have expected the meteoric rise of Joselu in the last few years.
In what has been a incredible couple of days for the striker, he has helped his country win the Nations League and looks set to join Real Madrid following a few prolific seasons in La Liga.
Merino, on the other hand, did show class during his time on Tyneside and it was disappointing to see him leave given the talent and potential he showed, but it’s great to see the pair excelling away from the Premier League.
