EXCLUSIVE: Dan Ashworth set for talks with Inter defender after arriving in Italy to seal Tonali deal

Dan Ashworth has arrived in Italy to push through a deal for Sandro Tonali, but the Serie A midfielder is not the only Milan-based player on his agenda.

We’ve been informed that Newcastle’s Sporting Director plans to hold talks with the representatives of Inter Milan left-back Federico Dimarco during his time in northern Italy.

It’s well documented that Eddie Howe is in the market for another left-back, with Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney heavily linked with a summer move to St James’ Park. However, his injury history, combined with Arsenal’s high asking price and the increased likelihood he stays at the Emirates to fight for his place has left Newcastle exploring other options.

Monza’s Carlos Augusto has been watched by scouts and Chelsea talent Lewis Hall is also on the club’s radar, but Ashworth will explore the possibility of bringing DiMarco to Tyneside.

Like Tonali, he is a fellow Italian international who has enjoyed a superb season in Serie A. The 25-year-old shone in the Champions League final and also offers versatility, playing as a left winger and left-sided centre-back on several occasions over the past two seasons.

  1. What’s your source for dimarco discussions? It’d be brilliant to have dimarco, don’t get me wrong, but we could make up anything that would be brilliant: “It is believed that Dan Ashworth, after closing the Tonali and Dimarco deals, will go from Milan to Naples to finalise the deal with Kim Min-Jae’s camp. It appears the toon army are storming through Serie A, having beaten Man United and Bayern to the signature of this formidable young talent.”
