Senior figure at Newcastle United reveals transfer strategy after Sandro Tonali signing

Following the arrival of Sandro Tonali, an unnamed ‘senior figure’ at the ‘very top’ of Newcastle United has been speaking to The Athletic about the club’s transfer policy.

A fascinating quote emerged from the piece, detailing the strict strategy in place when it comes to our recruitment approach. They said: “There’s a strategy in place. It’s not random. We will go for big players but the price has to make sense and it’s all about what our needs are.

At no point do we have the intention of making a statement signing. The intention is to get the right player, the right character, the right position, the right fit.

Sandro is a marquee addition, yes, but what’s important is these guys believe in our story and what we’re offering them — the opportunity for greatness.”

The unnamed figure agreed to speak to The Athletic on the basis they’d receive anonymity, in order to protect relationships, but their comments offer a real insight into our approach.

We don’t sign to secure a ‘big name’ or to simply make a statement. Instead, we have a detailed plan to ensure we sign the right player, with the right character, the right attitude and desire needed to fit into our project and grow with the club. The last line is also powerful – “the opportunity for greatness.” Either players buy into the project on offer and believe in our plans, or they go elsewhere in search of something different.

It’s no wonder the likes of Bruno, Botman, Isak and others have all been huge successes when we will only commit to signings who tick all of the boxes needed to survive and thrive in Eddie Howe’s side.
