EXCLUSIVE: Newcastle rejected Man City approach before £85m move for Bundesliga star

Manchester City have shown interest in a summer move for Sven Botman, but were swiftly told the Dutchman is strictly ‘not for sale.’

Speaking to a source with strong links in recruitment, we’ve been told that City enquired about Botman’s availability before going all in for Josko Gvardiol; the RB Leipzig centre-back in talks to join for £85m.

It’s believed Newcastle’s response was a swift and firm one, informing the title winners that the 23-year-old was going nowhere and not for sale at any price.

Pep Guardiola’s interest is a real compliment to Botman’s form in his first season in England, but our strong stance is reassuring, reminding fans and potential buyers that we intend to build on our top four finish and ever-improving squad.

No Premier League side conceded less than Newcastle over the 2022/23 season and the former Lille star was a key part of our impressive defensive record. His reading of the game, dominance in the air, quality in possession and deceptive recovery speed was a joy to watch as he formed a commanding partnership with Fabian Schar.

It’s inevitable that top clubs show interest in our star players, but with ambitious owners in place and the return of Champions League football at St James’ Park, we’re in a position of power and able to confidently rebuff enquiries a certain Mike Ashley would have entertained.
