Last week, reports in Italy revealed that Newcastle United were closing in on a deal for AC Milan centre-back Cathal Heffernan.
Today, the player’s father – Rob Heffernan – has posted a picture of his son at the airport as he prepares to board a flight to Tyneside.
The 18-year-old is an Irish youth international who impressed during a recent trial with our U21 side. Although a first-team centre-back is much needed, it’s great to see the club investing in our academy; a department which was completely neglected under the previous regime.
It’s also clear that Dan Ashworth is investing in Irish talent. Not only have we linked up with NIFL side Larne FC, we’ve brought in the likes of Alex Murphy and now Cathal Heffernan since the former Brighton chief arrived at the club.
Heffernan may not be the only Irish youngster to join our U21 side either, with Inter Milan winger Kevin Zefi also in talks with the club.
So was he spotted “on” the flight or on the concourse?
