New injury scare as Toon midfielder leaves training camp – but positive signs from Fabian Schar

Elliot Anderson has been forced to withdraw from the Scotland squad just days after his first call-up to the national side ahead of games against Cyprus and England.

Both the Scotsman and The Herald report that he picked up an injury in training on Tuesday and has been sent back to Newcastle for treatment.

The good news is it’s thought to be more of a ‘knock’ – not a serious injury that will keep him out for any length of time – but it’s gutting for the youngster and another concern for Eddie Howe; who confirmed a six-week setback for Joe Willock just a few days ago.

In better news, Fabian Schar has been spotted joining the Switzerland squad ahead of their EURO qualifiers against Kosovo and Andorra, suggesting his hamstring is OK.

The 31-year-old looked to be holding his hamstring in the final stages of our 3-1 defeat to Brighton, giving us a fresh concern at centre-back following an ankle injury to Sven Botman. However, the fact he’s not withdrawn from the Swiss squad indicates that he’s fine.

Let’s just hope he comes through the international break unscathed and doesn’t aggravate his hamstring; which he first felt during our pre-season friendly with Chelsea in July.
