Elliot Anderson caught in tug of war as Toon talent faces big decision – The Telegraph

As revealed by The Telegraph, Elliot Anderson is back on England’s radar after picking up a knock that’s stopped him from making his senior debut for Scotland.

The Whitley Bay-born midfielder could have moved a step closer to sealing his international future this weekend after being called up to the first-team squad for a European Qualifier against Cyprus.

However, a new injury has opened the door for England, who are hopeful that they can persuade the highly-rated youngster to switch allegiances once again, with U21 boss Lee Carsley thought to have watched the 20-year-old closely.

Anderson has represented both nations at youth level, though more recently he has been in and around the Scottish squads and was so close to his first cap. At senior level, players can still change the country they represent if they’ve not played over four competitive games before they are 21.

Scottish manager Steve Clarke is obviously keen to secure Anderson, but recognizes that he has to make some tough decisions as his career at club level starts to take off.

Asked about his future and late withdrawal on Thursday, Clarke said: “It is not something I can control. There’s not a lot I can do about it. Obviously (disappointing not to have the chance to work with Elliot), that’s why we brought him into the squad”.
