Newcastle set for contract talks to avoid losing key player for free in 2024 – Report

According to Football Insider, Newcastle are preparing to open talks with Fabian Schar over a new contract with the defender’s current deal set to expire next summer.

The 31-year-old has been a stalwart of our defence since Eddie Howe came in and was absolutely key in our bid to secure Champions League football last season.

The former Deportivo La Coruna man started 36 out of a possible 38 Premier League games in an incredible campaign and is now entering his sixth year on Tyneside.

Some fans and pundits have recognized that to become one of the elite club’s in Europe, we may have to look at upgrading our right-sided centre-half.

However, the Swiss international is more than capable of holding the position down this season and would still be a great backup option to have in the future even if we do upgrade.

  1. I think by definition, if we “upgrade” the person coming in will be better than him, so not sure how he’d be capable of holding the position down.
If we do upgrade, he’s a hell of a player to have as a backup.
