Newcastle United are showing interest in Southampton’s Carlos Alcaraz, according to talkSPORT.
In Alex Crook’s latest transfer notebook piece, he reports that we’re ‘keeping tabs’ on the Argentinian ahead of the January transfer window, with Eddie Howe a big admirer of the 20-year-old.
The piece adds that we enquired about his availability over the summer, suggesting he’s been on our radar for several months now.
The versatile attacker can play in midfield, as a number 10 or up front and showed his quality last season after a sealing a €13.5m move from Racing Club in January. He bagged four goals and two assists in 18 Premier League games but couldn’t stop the Saints suffering relegation to the second tier.
This season, he’s only started three of Southampton’s opening seven Championship games, coming on from the bench in recent defeats to Sunderland, Leicester and Ipswich.
His age, potential, work-rate and ability to play in several positions may appeal to Howe, but it remains to be seen if we’ll prioritise other areas in the January window, as we failed to strengthen at centre-back or bring in a holding midfielder over the summer.
