Early team news - 3 ruled out, 4 late fitness tests and 2 passed fit to face Burnley

Newcastle have a couple of niggles and fitness concerns heading into today’s 3pm kick-off with Burnley.

Eddie Howe has revealed that 'late checks' will be made on Callum Wilson (tight hamstring), Alexander Isak (tight calf), Sven Botman (knee) and Martin Dubravka (illness). It’s hoped all four will be OK, but a concern that both strikers have minor muscle complaints ahead of a busy run of fixtures.

Bruno Guimaraes (ankle) has been passed fit despite limping at the end of Wednesday’s win over City and Dan Burn has recovered from illness.

Harvey Barnes (toe) has been ruled out for three months and won’t play again until 2024, while Joe Willock (Achilles) and Emil Krafth (ACL) will be missing once again. The good news, however, is that Krafth made his first appearance in 13 months last night, starting for the U21s in the Premier League 2.

For Burnley, midfielder Manuel Benson (ankle) will miss out alongside suspended striker Lyle Foster, with winger Johann Berg Gudmundsson a doubt.

Here's what Howe had to say on the front in yesterday's press conference:

“Callum we’re going to see today… a very minor hamstring tightness. We’ll give him every chance to be available for the game. Same with Sven – we’re going to make a late check on him. Harvey is obviously out and Joe Willock is out, Emil (Krafth) is out. Dan Burn’s had some illness but we think he’ll be OK.”

“I think he (Bruno) did twist his ankle in the game (on Wednesday). I think, initially, it took him some time to run it off but hopefully he’s OK.”

“He (Isak) is another one we’ll make a late check on. That’s the cost of the three games we’ve had in the last week. Usually, it’s the third game where these things build up, and that’s where we are.

“We think he (Barnes) is going to be out for around three months. No surgery required which is good news but his foot is now in a boot. It’s an injury underneath his toe. He’s now started his recovery and he’s got to rest to let it recover then we can build him back up again."
