Howe speaks out on Yankuba Minteh after rave reviews from Feyenoord and five-goal thriller

A few days ago, Feyenoord boss Arne Slot spoke to the Dutch media about Yankuba Minteh’s impressive start to the season following his loan move from St James’ Park.

He revealed that Feyenoord scouts were watching the 19-year-old during his time at Danish side Odense, hailed his ‘self-confidence’, his ‘willingness to give everything’ and the ‘really impressive’ statistics he’s posting each week, flagging up his electric pace, his number of sprints per-game and determination to succeed (Read his comments in full further down this article).

After scoring three goals in his last Eredivisie appearances, featuring twice in the Champions League and playing the final 30 minutes of Feyenoord’s 3-2 defeat at Atletico Madrid this week, Eddie Howe was asked about the teenager’s progress this morning.

Here’s what Howe had to say – hailing his development, goals and ability to break into a good Feyenoord team – followed by Slot’s comments on the Gambian:

“He’s started really well. Really, really, really pleased. Whenever a player goes on loan, the expectation is that they learn and develop their game and he’s certainly learning a developing.

“He’s scoring goals, he’s playing in a good team, in a good league, so I’m really pleased.”

Arne Slot on Yankuba Minteh:

“Our scouts were also impressed by his year at Odense. Then (Feyenoord General Manager) Dennis te Kloese came to the technical staff.

“Minteh went to Newcastle United and the English were looking for a club to loan him to. That’s how he came to us.

”He certainly doesn’t lack self-confidence. His willingness to give everything is enormous. When we see his statistics, it is really impressive.

“Minteh runs more sprint metres against Ajax in an hour (in the recent 4-0 Feyenoord win) than many other boys do in two games. He is incredibly fast. And he wants it so badly.

“For the remainder against Ajax we substituted him for Ramiz Zerrouki. He immediately accepts that.

”He recently shot Gambia to a ticket for the Africa Cup next winter (he scored a vital goal on his international debut that sent Gambia to AFCON).

“Newcastle United has not made any requirements regarding minimum playing time or anything like that.”
