Player told to leave Newcastle by two former teammates after impressive display vs Portugal

On Friday night, Martin Dubravka was praised for his performance in Slovakia’s 3-2 defeat to Portugal in their EURO qualifier.

The 34-year-old made a host of great stops – including one brilliant double save – but wasn’t able to stop Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored twice in the five-goal thriller in Porto.

After the game, two former teammates in Martin Škrtel and Róbert Vittek spoke to about the goalkeeper on Slovakian TV, urging him to find a new club in January after losing his place to Nick Pope:

Róbert Vittek“With his performance against Portugal, he certainly caught the attention of several interesting clubs. If he doesn’t get an opportunity at Newcastle, I wish him to find a club in January where he will play regularly.”

Martin Škrtel“A goalkeeper with such qualities as he has deserves to catch [play]. Whether it will be at Newcastle or somewhere else. I am convinced that the match against Portugal was watched by many agents, coaches and officials, and Martin Dúbravka’s name was written down in many notebooks.”

Both feel he’s too good to be sitting on the bench, with the former Liverpool centre-back believing there’ll be several agents and scouts taking a close look at Dubravka after his impressive display last week. Watch higlights below, which features his double save at the end of the clip:

  1. Who is the 34-year-old goalkeeper known for making several impressive saves, including a brilliant double save, but couldn’t prevent Cristiano Ronaldo from scoring twice in a five-goal thriller in Porto?
