According to reports in Italy, Newcastle are showing serious interest in Atalanta midfielder Ederson.
This comes from TuttoMercatoWeb, who claim we are ‘very interested in signing the 24-year-old in January following his impressive performances with the Serie A side.
The powerful Brazilian signed for Atalanta in the summer of 2022 and has made a superb start to the 2023/24 season, netting four times and assisting one in 12 league appearances.
It’s not the first time we’ve been linked with Ederson, as Globo Esporte said we’d contacted his agent during his time at Corinthians in 2021. Two years on, it seems he could be back on our radar as we search for another midfielder to fill in for the suspended Sandro Tonali.
Ederson put in an impressive display at St James’ Park when Atalanta visited for a pre-season friendly in 2022, showing the sort of pace, power and physicality that would appeal to Eddie Howe’s high-intensity side.
However, the report does state that Atalanta’s €40m asking price could be a problem, with the Italians reluctant to part with a key player midway through the season; a reoccurring theme when it comes to January deals!
