Newcastle facing 4 possible permutations ahead of AC Milan decider & Dortmund vs PSG

Last night still hurts, but we must now move forward and look at the permutations heading into the final round of Group F fixtures two weeks today.

Put simply, here’s what needs to happen for us to come 2nd (qualify), 3rd (Europa League) or 4th (out of Europe), followed by the latest standings after our 1-1 draw and Borussia Dortmund’s 3-1 win at the San Siro:

  • We’ll come 2nd if we win and PSG don’t win (a PSG draw sees us pip them on the H2H record)
  • We’ll come 3rd if we win and PSG win
  • We’ll come 3rd if we draw
  • We’ll come 4th if we lose

Crucially, we have a head-to-head advantage over PSG, which will be used as a tiebreaker if we win at home to Milan and PSG draw at Dortmund.

As for the Europa League permutations, our goal difference is superior to Milan’s, meaning we’d finish third and remain in Europe with a draw against the Serie A giants.

So, there’s a LOT still to play for and still every chance that we progress. We’ll be fired up against Milan, Dortmund have an outstanding home record and will be determined to finish group winners against a PSG side who’ve lost both of their away games so far in the group.
