After leaving Sky Sports at the end of the 2022/23 season, Jeff Stelling has started his role at talkSPORT and spent this morning discussing all things Newcastle with Ally McCoist and North-East reporter Craig Hope (watch it in full below).
It was a really good watch and centered around the goalkeeping situation, leaving Eddie Howe with a decision to make now Nick Pope looks set to miss 4-5 months ahead of surgery on his dislocated shoulder.
They debate links with David De Gea – currently a free agent after leaving Man Utd – and a possible move for Aaron Ramsdale, with Hope also revealing Eddie Howe’s current stance as he prepares to give Martin Dubravka a chance to prove himself once again.
Lewis Miley also features, where the 17-year-old Geordie receives the praise he deserves after outstanding displays against Chelsea, PSG and Man Utd. Watch it in full below:
I think Newcastle are being sensible here. Dubravka deserves his chance and has proven in the past that he’s more than good enough. After all, is there many better back-up goalkeepers in the Premier League?
We could react and pursue one of De Gea or Ramsdale if the Slovakian does struggle, but we’ve seen squad players come up trumps on several occasions over the Eddie Howe era and I back Dubravka to do us proud.
Genuinely can’t see Dubravka struggling he is an international goalkeeper for a team who qualified for the Euros, has always been a good shot stopper, his weaknesses were crosses and playing out from the back, as are Popes btw, I think Popes extra height means he covers more of the goal but overall it’s hopefully a very slight difference.
