Over the past few international breaks, Anthony Gordon has somehow missed out on Gareth Southgate’s squads, with Tino Livramento selected by England’s U21s instead.
Kieran Trippier will be on the plane to Germany next summer for Euro 2024 and Callum Wilson has every chance of making it IF he can stay fit, but our young stars could force their way into Southgate’s plans.
The England boss admitted Gordon was close to his first senior call-up before he then bagged a goal and an assist in our 4-1 win over Chelsea last weekend. He’s previously shone at U21 level, has been involved in 10 Premier League goals this season and would bring some much-need pace, energy and versatility to the squad.
As for Livramento, England are inundated with quality right-backs, but he’s been outstanding at left-back over the past few games. He barely gave Cole Palmer a kick in our 4-1 win over Chelsea, was sensational at both ends at PSG and ran Rashford ragged in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Man Utd. This, mixed with his versatility, will surely appeal.
Southgate has talked up his quality in recent months and suggested he’s best suited at U21 level, for now, but his versatility and undoubted quality could bring him into the reckoning; particularly if he continues to shine at left-back.
Nick Pope has kept more clean sheets this season (6) than any other Premier League goalkeeper and his shot-stopping ability is second to none, with his man of the match display at PSG a clear sign of his quality on Europe’s biggest stage. However, reports suggesting he could be missing until April or May with a serious shoulder injury may have ruined any hope he had of forcing his way back into the England setup.
