According to reports in Germany this morning, Newcastle United are showing interest in Bayern Munich Joshua Kimmich.
SportBild report that we have been in contact with the Bundesliga side to find out if a deal would be possible. It’s believed the 28-year-old is not keen on a January move away, but there’s uncertainty over his long-term future with his current contract due to expire next summer.
Kimmich is currently Bayern’s vice-captain and has been a key player for the German giants over the years, but it’s claimed there’s been ‘no concrete discussions’ over a new deal with the club, leaving Newcastle eyeing up a ‘surprise’ move.
Based on our FFP problems and suggestions that the bulk of our spending will happen at the end of the season, this feels like an absolute non-starter this month and a move that would have to wait until the summer. With that in mind, have we REALLY enquired about his availability this month? I’m not so sure. Eddie Howe admitted last week that Dominc Solanke was out of our reach financially this window, so I’m pretty certain Joshua Kimmich isn’t happening; even if he has 18 months left on his current deal.
A top player who would add quality, experience and versatility to Newcastle, but a tough deal to pull off based on the likely fees involved and competition we’d face.
