Shock swap deal or here to stay? – The latest on Kieran Trippier after Bayern Munich bombshell

Following the breaking news this morning from The Chronicle’s Lee Ryder that Bayern Munich wanted to reunite Kieran Trippier with Spurs teammate Harry Kane at the Allianz, there have been conflicting reports.

The Guardian report a sensational swap deal could be in the works, with Joshua Kimmich sent to Tyneside to sweeten the blow of losing team leader Trippier. Eddie Howe is said to “admire” the German and the deal would strengthen a midfield on its metaphorical and literal last legs.

Kimmich, who featured in the 2020 FIFA World XI, can play at the base of the midfield or at right back. And with the Toon set to miss out on long-term target Kalvin Phillips if City do not lower their asking price, midfield reinforcement becomes even more important.

Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg confirmed that Bayern were “interested” in signing Trippier and also suggested a “straight loan” may be possible. Personally, I struggle to see Newcastle accepting any of the sort, as it barely serves to benefit us unless we receive a top player in return.

However, MailSport’s Craig Hope has said that the Mags view Trippier as an “invaluable” member of the squad and will not be looking to sell the player. Hope also cast doubt on a move for Kimmich saying that he was told it was “not the case” that Newcastle had made an approach.

The Times’ Martin Hardy also confirmed that there had been “no talks” between Bayern and Newcastle as of 11am on Friday.

With FFP proving to be a real sticking point for us this season, would it be worth cashing in on Trippier before he turns 34 in September or would the club be losing its on-pitch leader and most transformative post-takeover signing for the sake of balancing the books?

  1. Depends on the details of the deal.

If this is as simple as a straight swap for the rest of the season – then no, I don’t see the point in that at all.

If there is a deal to be had that would see Kimmich with us beyond that then yeah I’d be looking at that.

Trippier is a huge player for us but his future with NUFC is short. He could win trophies out in Germany whilst his deal goes towards the continued development of NUFC with a world class midfielder coming into the club 🤷🏼‍♂️.

  2. With financial unfair play nobody is indispensable.
Teams outside the Big 6 have no chance of catching up and building a squad that is strong enough as they just poach the best players from the rest and it’s gone back as far as Bill Shankly at Liverpool.
The Bosman ruling also killed transfers, we have greedy agents and greedy players in the game so there is very little if any loyalty.

  3. Here ffp is wrong , they brought this in after man United. Chelsea
Man city. Liverpool. Tottenham and so on bought all the players they could . Now every other team in the league is playing catch up but they can’t because they had a couple years march on everybody else . Let the lower teams buy. Stop the top and it will make games much much more entertaining.
