Alan Shearer makes Toon transfer claim and Gary Neville calls for FFP changes

Alan Shearer has weighed in on the discussion about Premier League spending rules as the Newcastle legend told his podcast The Rest is Football that the Toon were “desperate” to spend money this window but can’t.

The Premier League record goal-scorer said that we were a “classic example” of a sustainable ownership and agreed that the rules were outdated.

It comes after Newcastle CEO Darren Eales offered a sobering reminder of the restrictions in place in the January transfer window.

“It looks as if, or it sounds as if next summer they’ll have to sell one of their big hitters to try and generate finances to be a better team” Shearer said to co-host Gary Lineker.

But Shearer doesn’t feel too sorry for clubs and said, “let’s not remember the clubs actually signed up to this”.

Meanwhile, Gary Neville has also spoken about the rules calling for an “amendment” to FFP.“It was brought in by the elite clubs to protect the elite clubs,” he said on It’s All Kicking Off. “I don’t like it in its essence. I think there needs to be a change to the rule”.
