According to reports in Spain, Barcelona sent scouts to the African Cup of Nations to watch Newcastle United winger Yankuba Minteh.
This comes from Mundo Deportivo, who claim that Barca officials have also been tracking Ivory Coast sensation Ousmane Diomande; the Sporting Lisbon centre-back Newcastle have been linked with repeatedly in recent months.
Minteh started in two of Gambia’s three group games, operating on the right and left wing in Group C defeats to Senegal, Cameroon and Guinea.
I watched a the two games he started and the 19-year-old often looked Gambia’s biggest threat. He is still raw and has plenty to learn – as you’d expect as a relatively inexperienced teenager – but his lightning pace, directness and runs in behind caught the eye.
The report states that the La Liga giants have been watching six players at the tournament; Ernest Nuamah (Ghana) Ousmane Diomande (Ivory Coast), Dango Ouattara (Burkina Faso), Pape Matar Sarr (Senegal), Raphael Onyedik (Nigeria) and our very own Yankuba Minteh (Gambia).
#NUFC starboy Yankuba Minteh’s offside goal. Very well taken apart from the mistiming of his run of-course. So so effective and hard to stop once he gets moving. pic.twitter.com/zRSNPWyZSU
