According to David Ornstein at The Athletic, Newcastle have approached Aston Villa over a potential deal for midfielder Jacob Ramsey.
He reports that the England U21 international is attracting late interest from ourselves, Spurs and Bayern Munich, although a move to Tyneside would only be possible if we secured a ‘significant sale’ in the final few days of the window.
The 22-year-old has become a key player under Unai Emery, but it seems Villa are one of several sides weighing up their options from an FFP perspective, with striker Jhon Duran another who could be sold instead following interest from Chelsea.
Ideally, Villa want to keep Ramsey, but Ornstein suggests that offers above £50m would be considered.
Ramsey has played 10 times in the Premier League this season, scoring once. He can operate in midfield or out wide and netted six goals and eight assists in all competitions last term.
He’s a very good player and the sort of young English talent I can imagine Eddie Howe rating highly. But is he the defensive midfielder or powerful No 8 we really need this window? He’s very similar to Joe Willock in his style of play and the former Arsenal man is closing in on a comeback. Willock will take time to get up to speed after such an injury-ravaged season, but Ramsey has only started four league games himself due to his own fitness issues.
