Newcastle identify two Dan Ashworth replacements as Man Utd close in – Report

According to The Mail, Newcastle United are considering moves for former Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards and Bournemouth’s Richard Hughes as Dan Ashworth looks increasingly likely to join Manchester United.

The Magpies are still waiting for a formal approach but an agreement between the two United’s is expected to be reached, with Fabrizio Romano revealing today that Ashworth has ‘already said yes’ to the Red Devils.

Edwards is one of the most sought after personnel in football, but has been out of the game since leaving the Kop to start an advisory firm alongside former Liverpool director of research Ian Graham. It’s unclear if he would accept the job on Tyneside after turning down several approaches since leaving the Reds.

Another candidate to replace Ashworth is current Bournemouth technical director Richard Hughes.

The former Cherries defensive midfielder has drawn interest from Liverpool to fill a similar role. But Hughes may prefer a move to Tyneside due to the strong bond he built with Howe thanks to their time on the south coast.

He’s not mentioned in Craig Hope’s piece, but another name to watch out for could be Phil Giles; a boyhood Newcastle fan who has done a superb job at Brentford.
