Alan Shearer makes Dan Ashworth prediction as Man Utd finally make formal approach

Alan Shearer has spoken out on the ongoing Dan Ashworth saga after reports claim Manchester United have finally made a formal approach for the 52-year-old.

Speaking on the Rest Is Football podcast about our rumoured £20m demands after he was placed on gardening leave, Shearer believes a compromise will be reached between Man Utd and Newcastle.

As things stand, he’ll be stuck on gardening leave until 2026 if the Red Devils fail to pay up, but Shearer thinks they’ll pay a fee and bring him in sooner rather than later. However, he does hold fears from a Newcastle perspective, feeling uneasy about the knowledge he’ll take with him on our player contracts, clauses, transfer targets and strategy.

“Well, he’s had a really good career when you look at what he did at Brighton, what he did with England”, Shearer said.

“Newcastle did that to Brighton in terms of they wanted him badly at the football club, he had to go on gardening leave at Brighton before he could then take over at Newcastle. But, we’re not naïve enough to think that once someone goes on gardening leave that they’re not working for that other football club.

“My guess is that a compromise will be had, they’ll pay a fee, how much that will be I’m not quite sure but he’s done a really good job at Newcastle. But when you think about what he knows in terms of player’s contracts, clauses in their contracts, who Newcastle might have to sell, who they want to buy. I mean, he’s taking all that info with him to another football club.

“So, yeah it’s a tough one, but it is what it is. If you do well at your job somebody’s going to come in and try and poach you and nick you. Man Utd want the best at their football club now and it seems that finance won’t be an object, so I think they’ll do a deal with Newcastle and he’ll leave. I mean they’re a huge football club and they’re going to go on to bigger and better things under this new ownership model that they’ve got.

“It’ll be sorted out one way or another, he’ll eventually leave and Manchester United will pay a fee and Newcastle will get someone in to do that job.”

It’s clear that he’ll end up at Man Utd, it’s just a matter of when, not if. Hopefully we stand firm and INEOS chiefs stump up the cash that could aid our fight against FFP and soften the blow.

  1. We should let him go for about 12 million but a condition of that price should be that for the next 2 years he cannot recruit players who at th e time of his release were being tracked by us, or poach any Toon players by triggering confidential release clauses.

  2. Just explain to me how many can tap up our employees I thought was against the FA rules but it man u what else do you expect but clause’s must be in the sale regarding our players contracts and future buys slippery Dan what about his excitement at the project or is it all about money and self promotion #TOONARMY
