The €50m winger Newcastle could target this summer after long-term interest

A few week after Newcastle United signed Anthony Gordon last January, The Athletic revealed that Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams was under serious consideration alongside the former Everton man.

A year on, the 21-year-old Spaniard has had another eye-catching season in La Liga and has been linked with a summer move to the Premier League.

Fabrizio Romano reports that Chelsea are considering an end-of-season move, but adds that they are not the only Premier League side keen on the Spanish international.

Keeping in mind our long-term interest, his age, his ability to play down both flanks and the €50m (£42.5m) release clause that remains active in his contract, I would be surprised if Newcastle weren’t one of the clubs eyeing a summer bid.

After 15-goal involvements last season, the electric wide man has six goals and 11 assists over the 2023/24 campaign, also scoring twice in 11 caps for the Spanish national team.

A lot of time has passed since we signed Gordon, but The Athletic revealed in January that Williams is a long-term target we have continued to track, along with Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher, Arsenal’s Emile Smith Rowe and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko.
