Official England squad: Gordon called up, £40m man axed, two Mags out & Toney returns

Gareth Southgate has named his England squad ahead of upcoming friendlies against Bruno Guimaraes’ Brazil and Belgium over the upcoming international break.

Anthony Gordon has received his first senior call-up; a well-deserved reward for his superb form and a sign that he’s quickly overcome a potential knee injury.

Kieran Trippier (calf) misses out and Tino Livramento has not been selected despite being watched by Southgate on Monday, with Liverpool’s Joe Gomez called up along with Everton centre-back and reported Toon target Jarrad Branthwaite, who comes in for his first senior cap.

Former Newcastle United target Kalvin Phillips misses out following his poor form since a January loan move to West Ham, but Hammers teammate Jarrod Bowen has been selected alongside former Mag Ivan Toney.

Goalkeepers: Sam Johnstone (Crystal Palace), Jordan Pickford (Everton), Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal).

Defenders: Jarrad Branthwaite (Everton), Ben Chilwell (Chelsea), Lewis Dunk (Brighton), Joe Gomez (Liverpool), Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa), Harry Maguire (Manchester United), John Stones (Manchester City), Kyle Walker (Manchester City).

Midfielders: Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid), Conor Gallagher (Chelsea), Jordan Henderson (Ajax), James Maddison (Tottenham), Declan Rice (Arsenal).

Forwards: Jarrod Bowen (West Ham), Phil Foden (Manchester City), Anthony Gordon (Newcastle United), Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), Cole Palmer (Chelsea), Marcus Rashford (Manchester United), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Ivan Toney (Brentford), Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa).

A massive congratulations to Gordon, who is not only our second top scorer on 10 goals but the heartbeat of our attack. His pace, energy, movement and final product has been a joy to watch, with this call-up the perfect reward for his superb performances.

  1. How Henderson still gets a call up is beyond me but forget him.

So pleased for Gordon. He’s worked so hard since last summer with the 21s and continued it with us this season. He really is a special player.

I hope there are no unnecessary risks taken with that knee though. Involve him ready for the Euros but don’t forget these are only friendly matches please Gareth!!

  2. Hope this is Henderson’s swan song, no longer has the pace for internationals real ones anyway.
