Top target to replace Dan Ashworth goes public as Toon identify four options – Report

According to The Telegraph, Paul Mitchell has been identified as the ‘ideal candidate’ and leading target to replace Dan Ashworth at Newcastle United.

Luke Edwards reports that Mitchell – currently the sporting director at Ligue 1 side Monaco – has featured prominently in a recent round of talks on Tyneside, with the club looking to replace Ashworth, who is currently on gardening leave ahead of his move to Man Utd.

Other options have also been discussed, with Brentford’s Director of Football Phil Giles – who happens to be a boyhood Newcastle fan – West Ham’s Tim Steidten and former Roma sporting director Tiago Pinto also considered. The latter revealed his interest in the job earlier this week.

The Telegraph report that Mitchell is keen on a return to England and would not require the same lengthy period of gardening leave should he ask to leave Monaco.

Steve Nickson had been tipped for a promotion, but it’s thought the club prefer him to focus solely on scouting players and first-team recruitment.
