Toon ‘wonderkid’ closing in on first team call after impressing Eddie Howe – Report

According to The Chronicle, teenage winger Trevan Sanusi has been invited to train with the first team after impressing Eddie Howe.

As we revealed in an NUFC Blog exclusive last summer, Newcastle beat a host of ‘big six’ rivals to his signature. The 16-year-old joined the club’s academy after rejecting a new deal at Birmingham City; where he almost beat Jude Bellingham’s record for being the youngster player to represent the Blues.

Little over six months later, Lee Ryder reports that there’s ‘every chance’ he features in the senior squad before the season is out, with his speed and skill catching Howe’s eye.

His rapid progress with the Academy means he’s almost certain to land a professional deal, with the teenage ‘wonderkid’ already impressing beyond his years after featuring regularly in our U21 side. The England U17 international looks a huge talent, possessing the sort of pace and trickery that could take him to the top.

With Leo Shahar signed from Wolves, Cathal Heffernan arriving from AC Milan and Norwegian talent Travis Hernes also recruited before Alfie Harrison left Man City for Tyneside in January, it’s good to see some of our young stars stepping up.

  1. Fair point. My guess is there’s four or five very talented ones but a lot of them aren’t good enough. A lot of coaches have also come and gone recently. Need some stability and more investment. It takes time.

  2. I agree Olly but it shouldn’t be a problem for our owners. We bemoan the FFP restrictions but there’s none on signing young players. With the vast resources the PIF have we should be weeding out the rubbish at all junior levels and flooding the squads with excellent young players and not just from Ireland and the Premier League reserves but from South America, Italy, Spain, Germany, Africa etc.
Or are our much vaunted transfer spotters not capable of going beyond the usual confines?
Look at City, Chelsea and Liverpool. They seem to have a never ending supply of top young talent from around the world feeding into their first team squads.
We need more action and less empty promises of bringing in tomorrow’s stars. The money is there. Get it spent!
With the FFP restraints this is the way to do it.

  3. Toonarden:-
Your spot on, the top clubs will always be protected under FFP rules even if they tweak them slightly.
It’s going to take a long time to get to where we want to be even with increased revenues which will come with the expectation of Champions League Football.
PIF can afford to do it and should be going full steam ahead, we should also never be losing top players like Bobby Clark etc from our academy in the future.
