Alan Shearer: Eddie Howe set to be in charge of Newcastle United next season

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has said that Eddie Howe “still has plenty of credit in the bank” amid increasing pressure on the Toon boss, feeling certain he’ll still be in charge next season whether we qualify for Europe or not.

Some fans have been asking questions of Howe following the Magpies 2-0 FA Cup defeat to Manchester City on Saturday.

But Shearer has played down any suggestions he could depart if we don’t turn things around over the final 10 games of the season, feeling Howe still has the backing of those above him.

Talking on the BBC, Shearer said: “Eddie Howe still has plenty of credit in the bank. Whatever happens this season, whether they finish mid-table or qualify for Europe, Eddie Howe will be Newcastle’s manager next season.

“Manchester City are 38 games unbeaten here [at the Etihad]. When you are the opposing team coming here, you have to take [that into account]. Isak had chances in both halves, nothing. Dan Burn gave up a chance to shoot. You have to take those half chances to get any chance of a result.

“This season has been tough for Newcastle. However, there have been mitigating circumstances. The injuries, especially to Nick Pope and Joelinton. They miss both of those players a lot.” Shearer added.

Despite a series of injuries and off-field issues playing a major part in Howe’s squad selection, the Magpies are still just four points off a European spot, with 7th-placed West Ham having played a game more than ourselves.
