Newcastle embarrass Mackems on Monday as Toon kids beat strong Sunderland side

It’s been a delightful derby day for Newcastle United’s U21s, as Ben Dawson’s kids beat a Sunderland side full of senior players 3-2 at the Academy of Light today.

The Mackems started SIX senior players in today’s 1pm kick off, with Bradley Dack, Corry Evans, Pierre Ekwah, Timothee Pembele, Mason Burstow and Nathan Bishop all named in their starting 11.

33-year-old Evans scored for the Mackems, but a brace for 19-year-old Kyle Crossley and brilliant header from summer signing Cathal Heffernan handed us the win on Wearside, despite us being without several U21 stars in Trevan Sanusi, Anthony Munda, Leo Shahar and Sean Neave; some of which may be travelling with the senior squad to Dubai).

It’s been a tough season for our U21s, who currently sit third bottom of the Premier League 2 with a few games in hand, but priceless to see the young guns – including 18-year-old January signing Alfie Harrison and Jamie Miley – have too much for a Sunderland side that fielded six senior players.

NUFC XI: Brown – Powell, Thompson, Heffernan, Charlton – Stanton, J Miley, Harrison – Hackett, Crossley, Diallo.

SAFC XI: Bishop – Pembele, Lavery, Fieldson, Bainbridge – Evans, Ekwah – Kelly, Dack, Jones – Burstow.
