TalkSPORT: Newcastle in pole position to beat Tottenham to summer signing

According to talkSPORT, Newcastle United are the current ‘frontrunners’ in the race to sign Bournemouth captain Lloyd Kelly.

They report that Tottenham and three unnamed Serie A clubs are keen on the 25-year-old, but Newcastle are the current favourites and will intensify their interest now Sven Botman has been ruled out for six to nine months with an ACL injury.

Kelly has rejected a new contract with the Cherries and looks set to leave on a free transfer this summer. That mixed in with his versatility – he is comfortable playing at centre-back and at left-back – could make him a solid signing for the club, especially when additional cover will be needed in Botman’s absence.

The 6ft 3′ defender was brought to Bournemouth by Eddie Howe and is thought to be keen on a reunion with his former boss.

The Mail reported earlier this month that Newcastle have already held talks with Kelly’s camp over a potential summer move to St James’ Park.

TalkSPORT report that Spurs had a £20m bid rejected back in January for the former Bristol City star, but Bournemouth preferred to lose him on a free than jeopardise their Premier League status; which was at risk at the time.

  1. Why don’t Howe just go back to Bournemouth every player Howe is interested in is always linked to Bournemouth.Time for Howe to go not a great manager and as I keep saying last season was a fluke!
