Sandro Tonali update – Good news for Newcastle as FA statement is clarified

Sandro Tonali has been hit with new betting charges – but it sounds like Newcastle United do NOT expect it to impact his return date.

The FA released a statement on Thursday afternoon, revealing that the Italian breached 50 betting rules between 12th August and 12th October 2023, leaving many in fear that he’d face an extension of his current ban ending on August 26th 2024.

However, a host of North-East reporters have revealed that his breaches from his time in Italy and England have been categorised as ‘one period of betting activity’, meaning he is likely to avoid any further punishment.

Keith Downie (Sky Sports)‘Understand that Newcastle don’t expect Sandro Tonali’s additional 50 betting charges to delay his return to playing (August 27) or hamper his ability to train.’

Craig Hope (The Mail)‘It is thought the FA will treat Tonali’s alleged breaches as “one period of betting activity” (Italy + England), meaning he is likely to avoid a ban being added to his current suspension & any punishment will instead run concurrently.’

Luke Edwards (The Telegraph) – ‘#NUFC are not expecting Sandro Tonali to face a longer ban or be prevented from training after he was charged by English FA for gambling on games while registered as a player at Newcastle. Tonali had already admitted this and relevant info given to the FA in the autumn. Punishment likely to be concurrent with his existing 10 month ban which ends in August. Football Association are understood to consider this all as one period of betting (Italy and England) which he has already been punished for with a 10 month worldwide ban.’
