Unpopular opinion – Newcastle United fans and reacting to setbacks on social media

I’ve seen a lot of comments about the fact that Newcastle have failed to win against the likes of Bournemouth, Luton, Everton etc. this season, and how it’s a ‘disgrace’.

Although those results did happen – that type of judgement is not really how the sport works. Your season isn’t defined by your worst results. Especially when you’re ignoring the big wins that we have achieved. You could come up with a similar argument for pretty much any team in the world.

In the same way, I see so much of “our season’s over”, followed by the same people saying “Europe’s back on” after a win. Our likelihood of achieving these things really doesn’t swing that much one game at a time, but a lot of fans seem to think it does.

Ultimately, Tuesday’s result doesn’t change much for us probabilistically. Even looking at the bigger picture, a slight underperformance in league position in one season doesn’t automatically mean that the project has tanked, we’ve moved backwards and Bruno and Isak are going to leave.

It feels so obvious to say, but it’s just completely illogical to think that way. Especially with the latter point, footballers are humans – they don’t just chase the club with a bigger name and more trophies the moment we slightly underachieve.

Bruno and Isak have both said how much they want to stay, and it’s not a surprise. They’re in a good situation, and there are so many personal factors that come into play, and often it’s easier to stay than to leave. Especially if you’re happy – which they seem to be.

Every time we don’t win, it’s the same silly and reactionary takes about them leaving. I’m sure part of it is for cheap interactions, but from a purely footballing perspective, none of these small results or factors are having such big swings.

There’ll always be bumps along the way, but the overall trajectory needs to be positive. And that’s ultimately the way the rational decision-makers in the club, and representing the players, will think.

  1. It doesn’t help when websites (ahem) keep posting rubbish/click bait just to get traffic when they should and could debunk the **** instead.
