Sky Germany: Newcastle interested in €70m RB Leipzig defender – Tottenham also keen

According to Sky Germany, Newcastle United are keen on RB Leipzig defender Mohamed Simakan ahead of the summer transfer window.

In a Monday night ‘exclusive’ by Sky’s Florian Plettenberg and Philipp Hinze, it’s claimed both Newcastle and Spurs are interested in signing the versatile Frenchman, who can operate as a centre-back or right-back.

They report that the 23-year-old is ‘open and ready’ to leave the Bundesliga side, revealing that a move to the Premier League appeals to Simakan.

A £70m release clause is due to become active in his contract at the end of the 2023/24 season, although his current Transfermarkt value is half that figure.

This isn’t the first time we’ve been linked with the former France U21 star, with The Guardian reporting on our interest last summer. His ability to play in multiple positions across the back four could appeal to Eddie Howe, as would his pace and athleticism; something our defence has lacked in recent times.

With Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles both out with long-term ACL injuries, the club are thought to be in the market for two central defenders this summer.
