Newcastle eyeing £40m Chelsea star as Toon officials travel to Stamford Bridge – Report

According to The Chronicle’s Lee Ryder, Newcastle United have had scouts at Stamford Bridge recently to check on Blues midfielder Conor Gallagher.

Eddie Howe is thought to be a long-term admirer of the 24-year-old and a club official was in the stands to watch their 4-3 win over Man Utd earlier this month.

Gallagher features on our shortlist of potential midfield targets and is expected to leave Chelsea this summer, with the London club expected to sell to help them avoid a potential FFP breach.

The England international has been one of Mauricio Pochettino’s standout players this season, but he’s out of contract next summer and has seen talks over a new deal expire.

Lee Ryder reports that he could be available for a fee in the region of £40m, adding that he takes home around £50,000-per-week at present. Newcastle could offer him a hefty wage increase and he’d fit into Howe’s system well as a versatile No 8 who plays at high intensity, although Spurs and West Ham are also keen.
