“That feels like one to watch” – Journalist names three players on Newcastle’s shortlist

In a recent Q&A piece for The Athletic, North East reporter Chris Waugh was quizzed on Newcastle’s summer transfer plans and specifically asked if there were any names we should pay particular attention to.

He revealed three names; Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White, RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko and soon-to-be free agent Lloyd Kelly.

Although the club are yet to decide on their top targets, Waugh reveals that plans were narrowed down during last month’s international break as Newcastle draw up initial shortlists in each position.

Asked for a few names, Waugh said: “Morgan Gibbs-White is definitely being tracked and, given Nottingham Forest’s PSR issues, that feels like one to watch. The same with Lloyd Kelly at Bournemouth; the defender’s contract expires on June 30 and, given Newcastle’s need for centre-backs following Lascelles and Botman’s injuries, that seems like an attractive deal to do, especially given the 25-year-old can also play at left-back.

“Benjamin Sesko is someone who Newcastle have made enquiries about before and it will be interesting to see if they enter the bidding for the 20-year-old forward this summer.”

All three make plenty of sense. Gibbs-White’s age, potential, versatility and standout display in Forest’s Boxing Day win at St James’ Park will impress Howe, while the appeal to signing Kelly is clear given his free transfer status and ability to play in several positions.

Sesko is an intriguing one, with Waugh revealing that Newcastle have already ‘made enquiries’ about the 6ft 4′ Slovenian who has a £43m release clause in his contract.

As we reported in a NUFCBlog exclusive back in January, the 20-year-old has been on our radar for some time and could be an impressive Callum Wilson replacement should the striker move on this summer, which Waugh feels is likely.

  1. If we could spend roughly 100m on transfer fees for Gibbs-White and Sesko and get all three that would be an amazing bit of business. We really wouldn’t need that much else when everyone is back fit next season. The only question mark is will Minteh be brought back, sent on loan again, or sold for a quick profit to add to our kitty. If he’s not brought back with the intention of integrating him into the team then we’ll need an upgrade on Murphy/Almiron as well.
