Newcastle activate 12-month clause, two set to leave and Arsenal outcast shortlisted

According to The Mail’s Craig Hope, Mark Gillespie will be staying at Newcastle United for at least one more year.

In his latest notebook piece, he reveals that the club have activated a clause in the goalkeeper’s contract to keep him at St James’ Park for another 12 months.

The 32-year-old hasn’t made a single appearance over the last two season – his last three outings came in the League Cup during the 2020/21 campaign – but Hope reveals that he’s a good character behind the scenes, coupled with the fact he ticks a homegrown box for the club.

As for outgoings, Loris Karius will leave once his contract expires this summer and Martin Dubravka could follow him out the exit door. The Slovakian has one year left on his deal and won’t settle for a back-up role to Nick Pope next season.

Newcastle will therefore be in the market for at least one more goalkeeper and it’s believed Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale is one of several stoppers on our shortlist of options to compete with Pope; who is closing in on his return from a shoulder injury.
