“Absolutely bonkers!” – Alan Shearer issues summer warning to Newcastle United

Alan Shearer has urged Newcastle United to reject all summer bids for Alexander Isak, explaining why it would be “absolutely bonkers” to sell a player of his quality.

Speaking to Gary Lineker and Micah Richards on the latest The Rest Is Football Podcast, our former No 9 described the Swede as “one of the best” strikers on the planet, hailing his movement, pace, intelligence and quality after his latest brace on Saturday took him to 23 goals for the season.

Asked by Lineker about Isak’s form and the prospect of a big-money move this summer, Shearer insisted he is “worth an absolute fortunate” and the sort of player that doesn’t come around often, urging Newcastle to protect their “great asset” that would be near impossible to replace.

“He’s very, very good. He’s a modern-day forward.” Shearer said. “He’s a brilliant example of that. Had one or two injuries this season, but whilst he’s been on the pitch he’s been absolutely magnificent. He’s brilliant at running in behind – he’s so quick and once he’s away you aren’t catching him.

“He’s also so clever at coming short and dragging defenders in with him, therefore leaving space in behind. He’s a very clever, intelligent player and he’s got great ability. They are sat on a great asset. It’d be absolutely bonkers if Newcastle, foe whatever reason, sold him in the summer.

“He’s worth an absolute fortune and it would be bonkers if Newcastle sold him this summer. It’s really, really difficult to get goal scorers and he is one o the best. They love him and rightly so. The fans adore him.”

Thankfully, I don’t think we have much to worry about when it comes to Alexander Isak this summer. There’s no release clause in his deal, he still has four years left on his contract, he’s recently revealed how happy and committed he is to the club and, like Shearer suggests, our owners will know that forwards of his quality are like gold dust.
