Newcastle identify three ‘non-negotiables’ as transfer plans take shape – Report

Newcastle United plan to target ‘quality over quantity’ this summer and have identified three key areas for improvement, according to Mark Douglas at the i.

Heading into the summer transfer window, it’s believed there’s three ‘non-negotiables’ when it comes to new signings, with at least one centre-back, a young, versatile forward and a right winger set to be top targets.

With Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman likely to miss the remainder of 2024 after ACL surgery, it’s vital we strengthen at centre-back, with soon-to-be free agents Tosin Adarabioyo and Lloyd Kelly both being looked at. Sporting Lisbon’s Ousmane Diomande has also been heavily linked.

A young versatile forward is needed regardless of Callum Wilson’s future. He is 32 and out of contract next summer, but his injury issues mean he can’t be our only option to compete with Alexander Isak should he stay, especially if we qualify for Europe once again. The ‘versatile’ requirement suggests we’d like a striker who can also play wide.

As for a right-winger, this feels like an area where we’ve bee crying out for a first-team upgrade. Miguel Almiron and Jacob Murphy are solid squad options but not what’s required to take this team to the next level. Who we target is anyone’s guess, but Pedro Neto was linked a few months ago and could look to leave Wolves this summer.

Personally, I’d love to see us target Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo or push for Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise. Who would you like to see us sign in each of the three positions?

  1. Olise would be an incredible signing, but we’d not be the only ones looking

  2. Unless we have an unexpected war chest that we are allowed to spend it won’t happen.
It will be slow and steady spending within psr

  3. I think we can afford at least one premium player, probably a RW to replace Miggy.
AT CB Tosin on a free with young Alex Murphy coming through would be enough for now. Diomande or Huijsen would be nice, but not a priority now.
As to a versatile striker such as Marmoush 25 from Frankfurt at £22m seems affordable.

  4. Sell Miggy and replace him with Minteh .
We can sell Miggy for £22m and save a wage of £5.2m , Minteh would cost us £0 plus wages.
That deal would add funds to our small transfer kitty.
