Premier League clarify Newcastle’s path to Europe – FA Cup impact and battle for 5th/6th

Entering the final three games of the season in the hunt for European football once again, Eddie Howe’s Mags know that their fate is in their hands after the route to qualification was clarified by the Premier League.

We know that picking up seven out of the nine remaining points available to us will see us mathematically secure sixth space.

However, what is not decided at this moment is whether finishing sixth will provide the club with Europa League or Conference League football next seaso, as this will depend on the result of the FA Cup final between Man City and Man Utd.

In a post on their website, the Premier League confirmed: “If Man City lift the FA Cup on Saturday 25 May, the place in the Europa League group stages that the FA Cup winners earn is transferred to the highest-placed league spot without qualifying for a UEFA competition. As the UEL is of a higher rank than the UECL, sixth place in the Premier League will qualify for the Europa League, with the Europa Conference League spot moving down a place to seventh.”

Qualification becomes a bit more complicated if Man U win the FA Cup, however. If Man U finish fifth or sixth and win the cup, then the other team in the top six will join them in the Europa League, while seventh will play Conference League football.

But, if Man U win the cup while finishing seventh or eighth then the team finishing fifth will get a Europa League spot, with sixth place qualifying for Conference League.

Got that? No? Don’t worry it’s complicated, but we’ll try and keep on top of all the possible outcomes for another European adventure next season. Long story short, we’re all City on cup final day!
