The nightmare season that still ended with so many positives – Newcastle in 2023/24

The 2023/24 season is officially over. A campaign I’ll never forget for some of the incredible moments and memories, but also one I’ll be glad to see the back of.

The 4-1 win over PSG and return of Champions League football was magical. We’ve set a new Premier League records for goals scored with 85 in 38 games, beaten Man City, Arsenal, Spurs, Man Utd (twice) and Chelsea, traveled to the San Siro, battered Sunderland and treat fans to an 8-0 away day. We’ve also made two cup quarter-finals, seen St James’ Park become a fortress once again, finished above Man Utd and will play in Europe next season if Man City win the FA Cup.

Anthony Gordon has been a joy to watch all season and an inspired signing, we have witnessed an elite striker in Alexander Isak score 25 goals in all competitions, seen the emergence of Lewis Miley and exactly why the club invested in exciting talents Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall.

I’m proud of what we’ve achieved given the never-ending injury crisis, Sandro Tonali’s devastating ban, our ‘Group of Death’,  disastrous December, that string of tough cup draws and fact FFP limited our spending just when we needed a January boost. With all of that said, I wonder what might’ve been had the football gods been a bit kinder, but it’s fair to say we must learn from our mistakes, improve our away form and defensive frailties heading into 2024/25.

We’ll learn a lot from his and come back stronger heading into a huge summer, where our finances should be boosted by the Champions League payments and commercial deals we’ve managed to secure

Considering all the hurdles we’ve had to battle through, Eddie Howe and the players deserve real credit.
