Newcastle flop moves step closer to exit – Good news to kick-start summer rebuild?

Southampton’s play-off win over Leeds United could be good news for both Newcastle United and Ryan Fraser.

Speaking in January, Saints boss Russell Martin hinted that the club may not be able to keep the winger at St Mary’s “because of the finances involved”, but that may well have changed following their return to the Premier League.

Southampton reporter Alfie House (Daily Echo) revealed after Sunday’s 1-0 win at Wembley that the newly-promoted side plan to make permanent moves for Fraser and West Ham loanee Flynn Downes, suggesting our wantaway winger could finally leave for good.

Not only was he left training with the U21s during large parts of the 2022/23 season, he’s believed to take home around £60,000 per week. That explains why Southampton needed promotion to afford him, but also shows what a relief it would be for Newcastle to get him off the books.

Fraser seemed like an shrewd signing when he arrived on a free transfer in 2020, but three goals in 59 appearances, a string of injuries and a falling out with Howe has seen him flop during a pretty forgettable time on Tyneside.

Fingers crossed an agreement can be reached, as he, Isaac Hayden, Jamal Lewis and Jeff Hendrick (out of contract) could save the club several million in wages if we can move them on this summer. I wonder if Southampton fancy Matt Targett back…
