Newcastle eyeing at least four signings with “July surprise” on the cards – Report

Mark Douglas has released an intriguing piece on Newcastle’s summer transfer plans with the window set to officially open on Friday.

A source close to the club has told the i that we’re targeting a right winger, a right-sided centre-back, back-up striker and a goalkeeper to challenge Nick Pope at the ‘bare minimum’, suggesting further addition could follow those four priority positions.

The same source added that we’ll target players who will take the team “up another level”, suggesting any squad improvers like Lloyd Kelly or James Trafford could be followed by some top-quality additions.

A “July surprise” – similar to Sandro Tonali’s shock arrival last summer – could also be on the cards, with this line from Douglas’ piece particularly intriguing:

‘At the moment the majority of the targets that have emerged have Premier League experience on their CV but the club have been scouting in France, Italy and Germany over the past 12 months. A potential “July surprise” – think Sandro Tonali’s move from AC Milan which blindsided many – is more likely than not.’
There’s several familiar names doing the rounds in the current gossip columns, but this suggests a signing out of the blue could emerge next month, with Newcastle likely to step up their spending plans after June 30th; a mini-deadline that signals the end of the financial year for PSR purposes.
As for imminent arrivals, Douglas reports that Lloyd Kelly’s move to Tyneside is edging closer and closer despite interest from Liverpool and Spurs, with the 25-year-old defender particularly eager to be reunited with Eddie Howe; the man who brought him to Bournemouth almost five years ago.

  1. The great boxer, Mike Tyson, once said “everybody has a plan….until they get punched in the face.”

We’ve had some seriously **** transfer windows in the past, and in all of those I’m sure we were “eyeing at least 4 signings.”
Note – no sign of a defensive midfielder.

    Let’s see how it goes.

  3. PSR ends June 30th. Deals from 1st July can be made free of the restriction for that year. Most clubs will be doing business from that date.
