Newcastle turn attention to three signings and surprise sale after Kelly medical – Report

According to The Telegraph, Newcastle United have shifted their attention to the signings of a right winger, right-sided centre-back and striker following the arrival of Lloyd Kelly.

After passing his medical in London yesterday, the left-sided defender will become our first summer signing after penning a five-year deal at St James’ Park on a free transfer.

However, this is just the start of a busy window for Eddie Howe’s Mags, with Luke Edwards reporting that we are now upping our efforts to seal three more priority signings ahead of the 2024/25 season.

James Trafford is looking increasingly likely to arrive as the young goalkeeper recruited to compete with Nick Pope and we’re also in need of a right-sided upgrade on Miguel Almiron, with Michael Olise, Jarrod Bowen, Nico Williams, Bryan Mbeumo, Pedro Neto and Crysencio Summerville all linked in recent weeks.

Competition for Fabian Schar is also needed after Chelsea beat us to a deal for Tosin Adarabioyo, with an injection of pace wanted down that side. Another striker has also been targeted, with Callum Wilson’s future in doubt now he’s 32, entering the final 12 months of his contract and considering a new challenge elsewhere.

With PSR a constant factor and ‘player trading’ likely to help us comply with FFP rules, Edwards insists that outgoings will also be key and a big theme of our summer, with Yankuba Minteh tipped for a surprise exit.

He reports that we’re ‘weighing up a number of offers’ for the 19-year-old following his impressive loan spell at Feyenoord, knowing an immediate profit on the teenager could do wonders for our summer budget.
The Telegraph also reveal that Callum Wilson is ‘thought to be interested in a new challenge’ after losing his first team spot to Alexander Isak, with Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin discussed in recruitment meetings as a potential replacement. No doubt several other strikers are under consideration, however.

  1. I’d be happy with Murphy and Minteh this season. It would be at least as good as Miggy and Murphy and it might save us a fortune this season. I know a lot of people think it’s a key area to upgrade, and maybe it is. But without European Football getting the right elite player may prove difficult.

  2. Prem – if it was a ‘make do’ job this season then I agree we are cover – and could probably still afford to send Minteh on loan & sell Miggy – if we move Gordon to the RWF position.

We have Barnes for LWF – but I also think Joelinton, Anderson & Willock could cover that position just fine.

That would give us Gordon & Murphy on the right, but I’d also consider moving Trippier further forward – after all, he’s been the main right sided threat when Miggy was in the team 🤷🏼‍♂️.

Hes looked a little suspect defensively last season as well – so keep his threat in the team, but have Tino as his defensive security behind him. I’m not suggesting that as option 1 but it could be an option all the same.

  3. I really hope there is someone at the club with the sense to say – if we are getting rid of a prolific but injury prone goalscorer in Callum Wilson, then a non prolific but equally injury prone Calvert Lewin isn’t the right placement!!.

  4. If Callum goes then I still say we need two replacements, Guirassy and Semih Kılıçsoy would be ideal. Save money on RW if needed.

  5. Sell
    Migy

    Longstaff ( I’m from Shields )
    Dubs

  6. A club paying big money for minteh after one good 1/2 season in Holland is speculative and unlikely so it’s down to what the toon see in him and that’ll be more informed after summer

wilson as 3rd CF makes sense and a 2nd will come down to “free CF and spend on RW” or vice versa.

A lot depends on futures of minteh and almiron to decide how that RW /CF choice plays out

  7. Chiesa would be a perfect replacement for Miggy and a cell mate for Tonali.
Wouldn’t want to sacrifice Minteh just yet unless FFP is a bigger problem than we have been told, there are numerous other players who could be jettisoned first.

  8. PremAndUp: without

I think last season showed that we need an extra capable body out wide. Ship Miggy out, get a new 1st teamers AND get Minteh in the squad

  9. Stick with Yakuba Minteh if the big boys like Liverpool are interested at 40m he must be good, don’t waste the chance of getting another Anthony Gordon, if it’s a fine and a 6 point deduction who cares
