Anthony Gordon has been on media duties (again) for England today, speaking to the press ahead of Sunday’s last 16 clash with Slovakia at Euro 2024.
Not for the first time, he spoke so well, showing a mature head on young shoulders, bags of self-belief and articulated himself impressively when discussing his lack of minutes, what he can bring to Gareth Southgate’s side, the boos that followed last week’s 0-0 draw with Slovenia and even Martin Dubravka, who was brought up by one Slovakian journalist.
As you can see via the video below, the 23-year-old has grazes on his face, arms and hands after falling off his bike earlier this week, but he brushed off any concerns and explains exactly how the freak injury occurred!
Gordon believes he’s a “nightmare” to play against, feeling he can offer something different to this England side that could compliment Harry Kane. Watch everything he had to say below, with his comments starting 20 minutes into the clip:
Gordon on the boos after the 0-0 draw with Slovenia – “I don’t really care about stuff like that. I think of it in a positive way. If people are being negative it’s only because they expect a lot from you, which is a positive thing. If we want that to stop, we need to perform and give people what they want to see.
Gordon on what he can offer this England team – “I think my main strengths are that I am very direct. I’m quick. I’m a nightmare for anyone I play against. I’m positive – every time I get the ball I always try to make something happen. I’m not a very safe player, I’m always going for it and trying to put players on the back foot. With the player we’ve got and H (Harry Kane) dropping deep, I think I bring a different element to the team.”
Gordon when asked if he’s spoken to Southgate about his game time – “No I’m not that guy. I think if I train to the very best of my ability, do the best I can everyday, that’s my way of giving the manager a headache in terms of selection and the rest I cant control.”
Gordon on his freak bike injury – “[It was] meant to be a recovery bike ride and I was going down the hill and tried to take a picture for my family and before I knew it I was face first into the floor. It’s only few cuts, it’s not anything painful. Electric is a lot faster than normal bikes – the front brake is on the left hand side and I tried to press the right one to slow down and it didn’t slow down it came to a full stop and I’ve gone ten feet in the air chin first. I just carried on and finished the bike ride. When I got back to camp I had to put stuff on it which absolutely stung. To be fair, no one seen me thankfully.”
