According to The Times, Eddie Howe will become a leading contender for the England job if Gareth Southgate decides to leave his position after last night’s defeat in the Euro final.
As revealed by Matt Lawton, The Times’ Chief Sports Correspondent, Howe is of ‘serious interest’ and will be approached by the FA if Southgate departs; which appears to be the likely outcome after Sunday’s crushing loss to Spain.
England must seek permission from Newcastle owners – Saudi PIF – to speak with Howe and any compensation payout would be ‘expensive’, with the 46-year-old currently in a lengthy contract at the club.
The Times believe that Amanda Staveley’s exit could boost the FA’s hopes of luring Howe, as she was his main point of contact at the club and key to his appointment shortly after the Saudi takeover. However, it’s not yet known if Howe would entertain an offer to leave day-to-day Premier League management for the national job, especially when his work at Newcastle United is just getting started as we look to get win a trophy and qualify for Europe next season.
The same report states that a few other names are under consideration, with former Chelsea and Brighton boss Graham Potter a cheaper option, along with Lee Carsley, who guided our U21 side to European Championship victory last summer.

There’s a huge difference between managing a regular club and managing internationally. At club level if you don’t have a decent right winger you can go out and buy one. At international level you are limited to taking the best player with a particular passport.
Eddie Howe’s results are currently limited by how much we can spend. Who we can buy.
With the England team as it is we actually have one of the best squads we’ve had in decades.
If the FA had the foresight to put Howe in charge we would see some of the best attacking football from an England team that we’ve seen in years.
And, of course, PIF would get to bring in a manager that they’ve had their eye on (and probably been in discussion with) for almost 3 years.
Bit of a WIN – WIN situation.
