Newcastle United will make a move for Mauricio Pochettino if Eddie Howe opts to take the England job, according to The Mirror.
Senior reporter John Richardson reports that PIF are keen for clarity on Howe’s future, aware of the fact we’d have a very short window to appoint a replacement before the new season.
Hopefully it does not come to that and Howe receives the assurances he requires following Amanda Staveley’s exit and the appointments of Paul Mitchell and James Bunce. However, should he depart, it’s believed Pochettino will be the club’s top target.
Mitchell – our new sporting director – handed the Argentinian his first job in England during their time together at Southampton and also enjoyed a ‘good working relationship’ with the 52-year-old at Tottenham.
Pochettino is currently available, but The Mirror report that the former Chelsea boss has interest from elsewhere, meaning Newcastle ‘would have to move quickly’ if Howe does leave for the Three Lions job.
This does feel like an easy story to write from The Mirror. But, based on Poch’s Premier League experience, close links with Mitchell and the fact he was a reported target for PIF when the takeover almost went through in 2020, it would make a lot of sense – I just hope it doesn’t come to that.
And I wonder how he came to this lazy journalistic masterpiece 🤦
Lazy, lazy, lazy
This is what is so wrong with our press

Something I considered as a replacement and if Eddie can’t keep control of his perceived remit due to PIF looking to change Eddie’s intense training regime to address injury issue, I can see him looking elsewhere but not the part time England position.

Eddie Howe’s status appears to be a subject of considerable concern, particularly in light of the forthcoming season. The importance that PIF places on stability in management is demonstrated by their involvement in the pursuit of clarity.

It’s interesting to see how PIF is navigating the uncertainty around Howe’s future. Given the tight timeline for a potential replacement, Pochettino certainly seems like a viable option, especially with his history with Mitchell.
