Former Newcastle striker set for Championship move after 24-goal season

A former Newcastle United youngster will get a second chance to prove himself in English football. Elias Sorensen, now 24-years-old, is due to trade the Danish second division for the English Championship when he signs for Portsmouth from Esbjerg fB.

The deal is worth around €400,000, according to Tipsbladet, and Pompey will be hoping the striker will bag enough goals to keep them clear of relegation, following their League One title win and subsequent promotion. The striker was in phenomenal form in the NordicBet Liga with 24 goals and 12 assists in just 30 appearances last season.

The Dane with the Geordie accent left his homeland for United from HB Køge in 2016 initially joining the U18 squad. After an excellent 2018/19 campaign, in which he netted 20 in 26 outings for the U23s, Sørensen went on several unsuccessful loans in the lower divisions and aboard. He returned to his home country for an undisclosed fee in 2021 after five years on Tyneside without a making a single first team appearance.

During the Ashley era, fans were looking for any sliver of positivity and, at one stage, Elias looked like he could make the breakthrough to the first team, but ultimately fell short. Having successfully rebuilt his career he’ll be one to keep an eye on next season because if he nets a similar number of goals, he’ll be on many teams’ radars.

There are also rumours doing the rounds that former-corner-flag-kicking-extraordinaire Matt Ritchie could be rejoining Portsmouth too.
