Howe issues Gordon and Trippier update as Marci Guehi question is shut down
Eddie Howe insists that Anthony Gordon and Kieran Trippier appear fully committed to Newcastle United despite links with a potential move away - but admits that "anyone could leave" while FFP continues to affect the club.
Gordon has been linked with Liverpool ever since that chaotic end to the PSR deadline in June, while clubs in Saudi Arabia and West Ham (as of last night) have been credited with an interest in Trippier.
However, Howe insists that Gordon has "no distractions" and is very much like Bruno in being fully focused on Newcastle, praising his performances in training alongside Trippier; who he feels is NOT "openly looking to leave."
On Marc Guehi, the boss gave a very short reply to Sky Sports' Keith Downie, saying: “I’m able to give you nothing, Keith" amid claims we are closing in on a £65m deal for the Crystal Palace centre-back. Here's what Howe had to say:
Howe on Anthony Gordon - "His head is where Bruno's is (committed). He's with Newcastle. No distractions. He's been really impressive (in training). His focus has been on his work and his fitness, everything to do with this football club, nothing else.
"They (Gordon and Trippier) needed an extended break. It was essential we gave them a mental break. They've came back in good shape. Really happy with them. Hopefully they will be involved at the weekend."
Howe on Kieran Trippier - “I don’t think Kieran’s openly looking to leave. He’s been very good in training this week — has come back with an ambition to play and fight for his place, like every player does in pre-season. I see a player who is fully committed.
"I see him as a huge part of the team and the squad going forward, but while we’re in this moment with FFP affecting the club, there is still the possibility that anyone could leave. I won’t talk about individual players but naturally with incomings there will be outgoings too.”
The last line leaves it open and it's a clear 'never say never' situation as a result, but it's a positive update on Gordon after some suggested his head had been turned, and a sign that Howe still sees Trippier as a big part of his plans.
