Newcastle reached verbal agreement until player’s camp forced bid to change – Report

The Athletic have shared new details of Miguel Almiron’s proposed move to Charlotte FC, revealing exactly why the deal collapsed earlier today.

They report that Newcastle had reached a verbal agreement with the MLS side, only for the deal to collapse after the player and his agent demanded more money.

As a result, it’s believed Charlotte then lowered their offer to $9million (£7m) to allow for Almiron’s demands, which forced the deal to collapse as Newcastle deemed that figure to be too low.

The Athletic report that Newcastle are prepared to cash in on Almiron at the right price, but have not been actively seeking a sale, with Eddie Howe happy to keep the 30-year-old on Tyneside ahead of the upcoming season.

As the MLS transfer window closes tonight, it seems any move to Charlotte FC or any other American side is now off the cards, with Almiron and his agent’s demands scuppering a return.

  1. This will most likely be his final move so can understand him wanting a decent contract. What I can’t understand is why Howe is keen to keep him, he works hard but other than one purple patch he doesn’t offer much in terms of goals or assists.

Take the reduced offer and get him over our wage bill.

  2. He could still do a job as a squad player – but he’d be behind Gordon, Barnes, Murphy and whoever we may get in at RWF.

I’d rather move him on & get some money for him if we can – and more importantly get his wages off the books.

We can offer him out for free but if his wage demands or agent fees are putting club off then we can’t move him on – but how many players can we say that about?!.

  3. He is one of many who are choking the club to death. Add Targett Lewis, Longstaff lascelles,Issac,Hendricks ,Little Jock ,Dubravka, all championship and that adds up to a lot of cash, all unsaleable

  4. Come January he and his agent will be actively looking for a transfer as he will be probably only used in cup games

  5. Dave:-
His agent will only look for a transfer if someone can better his £100k a week.
It’s all about the money, and we have a few players who have been given stupid contracts and unfortunately we won’t be able to advance at the pace we would like to until their contracts run out.
These players sticking around are not paupers neither are their greedy agents.
