For the first time this season, the team sheets are in at St James’ Park as Newcastle United prepare to face Southampton in today’s 3pm kick-off.
Here’s the side Eddie Howe has selected against Russell Martin’s Saints:
STARTING XI: (4-3-3) Pope – Livramento, Schar, Burn, Hall – Longstaff, Bruno (c), Joelinton – Murphy, Isak, Gordon.
SUBS: Dubravka, Trippier, Targett, Kelly, Krafth, Willock, Barnes, Almiron, Osula.
Callum Wilson (back), Lewis Miley (foot), Sven Botman (ACL) and Jamaal Lascelles (ACL) miss out, while Sandro Tonali won’t be back from a ban until August 28th; the likely date for our Carabao Cup trip to Nottingham Forest.
Former Mag Adam Armstrong leads the line for the Saints after bagging 21 goals and 13 assists in their promotion campaign last season, with new signings Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Flynn Downes also starting after they completed permanent moves following impressive loans from Man City and West Ham respectively.
HOWAY THE LADS!
Given his options that’s a canny looking team from Howe.

Pleased for Murph getting the nod – fancy him to score today.
Also pleased for Tino – it’s a good show of faith in the lad & against his former club.
Finally, Bruno for Captain is a great call.
They’ve got nowt to lose today so don’t expect it all to go our way today – but a clean sheet & couple of goals would be a good start HWTLs

Don’t anticipate everything to go our way because they have nothing to lose today, but a clean sheet and a few goals would be a nice start HWTLs.
